Welfare

The Welfare Department is dedicated to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and connected community within CULS. We recognise that studying law, or any subject, at Cambridge can be both intellectually rewarding and demanding. We aim to create opportunities for members to relax, build friendships, and maintain a healthy balance alongside their academic commitments.

Throughout the year, the department organises a varied programme of welfare initiatives designed to bring members together in an informal and welcoming environment. From regular drop-in sessions offering complimentary refreshments between lectures to welfare brunches, seasonal events, and collaborative socials with other student societies, our events provide opportunities for members to unwind, meet new people, and strengthen their sense of belonging within the Society.

Collaboration is central to our work. By partnering with other CULS departments and societies across the University, we seek to build a welcoming community that reflects the diverse interests of our members while encouraging participation beyond the classroom. Initiatives such as our Run Club further support this aim by providing an accessible and inclusive space for students of all abilities to stay active, meet fellow members, and enjoy Cambridge life together.

As the Society continues to grow, the Welfare Department remains committed to expanding the range of support and opportunities available to members. Our goal is simple: to ensure that every student feels welcomed, supported, and able to make the most of their time within CULS, both academically and socially.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Diversity and Inclusion Department is committed to ensuring that CULS is a welcoming, accessible, and supportive community for every member. We believe that the legal profession is strengthened by a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, and we aim to ensure that all students feel represented, valued, and empowered to participate fully in everything the Society has to offer.

Throughout the academic year, we organise a programme of events, discussions, and networking opportunities celebrating and supporting a broad range of communities and identities. Our work encompasses themes including gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality, disability, neurodivergence, religion, caring responsibilities, and social mobility, while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of our members.

Our WhatsApp affinity groups provide welcoming spaces where students can connect with peers who share similar experiences, whilst also creating opportunities for the wider CULS community to engage with important conversations around inclusion and equality within the legal profession. Alongside these initiatives, we work closely with law firms, chambers, alumni, and legal organisations to showcase diverse career pathways and to ensure members have access to role models from across the profession.

Collaboration sits at the heart of our work. We partner with departments across CULS to embed diversity and inclusion throughout the Society's careers programme, speaker events, advocacy competitions, publications, and social calendar, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all members regardless of background.

Ultimately, our goal is to foster a Society in which every student, whether studying law or another subject, regardless of their background or aspirations, feels welcomed, supported, and confident in pursuing a career in the legal profession. We look forward to welcoming both new and returning members throughout the year.
